Mendocino County Housing Hub

Take Action

The Board of Supervisors has reinstated full code compliance and enforcement. This group of active citizens is gathering consensus through September 15, 2026 for a community-designed amnesty program to bring before the Board, and to get this issue on the agenda of the Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for that date. Here is how you can take part.

The most impactful thing you can do if you are limited on time is to send this to your friends and family in the area who you think might find affordable housing to be an issue.

We'll walk you through five actions, one page at a time. Start here.

I'm a homeowner or resident

Please take as many of these actions as you can, today:

1 Sign the petition

There are two petitions to choose from in the links directly below: one for residents and one for employers or managers. If you are a local business owner please use the petition for business owners — our businesses are impacted by lack of appropriate worker housing, and these signatures will carry special weight.

We will need your real name and city or residential area for this petition. We will not share the identities or locations of anyone who is willing to sign the policy consensus worksheet or send a Case Document (see below) unless you give us permission to do so.

If you do not have the means to complete the petition online, please contact us at help@saveourhousing.org and we will take steps to help you participate.

2 Submit a letter or email to the Board of Supervisors

We need to send as many letters as possible to the Board of Supervisors before their meeting on September 15, 2026.

You can send a "snail mail" addressed to The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors at 501 Low Gap Road, Ukiah CA 95482. Envelopes have gravitas.

You may use the public engagement function of the County's website to send an e-comment, or find instructions for leaving a voice message, at Public Engagement | Mendocino County, CA.

Please make your comments forward-looking, respectful, and constructive. We are asking our public servants to work for us to meet our needs. If you are personally impacted or are close to someone who is experiencing full code enforcement without compassion, please tell your story however that is comfortable for you. If you are a business owner or manager, please make sure to describe how lack of available and affordable housing is impacting your bottom line and your business practices.

Consider submitting a Case Testimonial to us. If you are personally impacted by enforcement actions please do consider telling us about it. Personal testimonials about harm experienced by our residents and businesses due to the county's practices are extremely compelling. Your story helps the community understand what is at stake. Please submit the form below and let us know if you wish to be identified to the BOS. No person will be identified to the general public or by name on this site.

3 Tell your neighbors

We need as many people as possible to make all aware of the crisis and this opportunity to heal it. Please send this website to every Mendocino person on your list and share across all social media outlets: https://saveourhousing.org

Invite everyone you know in Mendocino County to sign the petition and attend the meeting September 15. Encourage those affected to tell their story. We believe that a sustainable local economy and thriving future begins with community. Forcing residents out of their homes due to complaint-driven permit compliance, often as a result of a single complaint, forces us to actually reduce available affordable housing. It is time to engage everyone toward a common goal.

4 Show up — respectfully — to the Board of Supervisors meeting in Fort Bragg on September 15, 2026

There is nothing more effective than a room of residents who show up in person to petition their elected representatives. Please plan to attend and speak during the public comment period.

We will post more details on time, location, and a place on the agenda as the information becomes available to us. Please mark your calendar now and sign up to receive email updates so we can keep you up to date.

5 Fill out and sign the Policy Consensus Worksheet

As soon as the Board adopts the community proposal to adopt a community-designed amnesty policy, we will move as a group to codify the agreed principles of the new policy points, which will align with adopted California State Amnesty Law AB 2533. Your participation in this process now smooths the way and will save months in the process.

This form begins the process of a community directed approach to building the components of a fair and sustainable code enforcement policy that includes compassionate care for those who cannot bring their entire property up to code in the face of a complaint or other enforcement catalyst.

This form follows the policy mandates already adopted at the state level via AB 2533 for ADUs and Junior ADUs which could be adapted for all dwellings. You can read about it in the Library: Planning an ADU Amnesty Program – ABAG Excerpts, and our own summary based on AB 2533, Amnesty Basics.

Suggested background reading before you fill out the worksheet: Basics to Address Current Documented Harm — the draft community-designed amnesty program the worksheet items are drawn from.

This is a webform you may complete and submit while visiting this website. If you do not have the means to do that, please contact us at help@saveourhousing.org and we will assist.

Go to Step 5: Fill out the worksheet →

Prefer paper or the phone? No problem — email help@saveourhousing.org or call [phone number coming soon] and leave a message, and a volunteer will help you take every one of these actions without touching a computer.
